The Way in Which Corfield v. Coryell is Cited
In an earlier post, I noted a discrepancy in the citation of Corfield. The case is typically cited with the date of 1823. But Justice Washington’s opinion was actually issued in 1825, as the report explains.
A close examination of recent Supreme Court opinions illustrates the problem. In some cases, the Court uses the 1825 date. In others, the Court uses the 1823 date. There is no consistent pattern, though the 1823 date has not been used since 1999.
