Ezra Klein Replaced by The Volokh Conspiracy

Well, I suppose that this is a coincidence, but on the same day The Washington Post announced Ezra Klein’s departure they announced that they will now be hosting The Volokh Conspiracy.

Congratulations to Orin, Ilya, David, Eugene, and the entire gang.  They are now part of the mainstream media. (Just kidding. Sort of.)

What’s wrong with self-professed libertarians joining the mainstream media, and perhaps cashing in? Perhaps they will promote the concept of the Founders, Framers, Ratifiers and the Constitution as libertarian just like themselves.

  2. Yes, the timing was fun, but completely coincidental. This had been in the works for a bit.

In the works since Jeff Bezos’ purchase? Is Bezos a libertarian? see:

    raising the question.

    • I have no idea whether Bezos had a personal interest, or whether the Post is simply trying to absorb more web-based content. Note that the Post reached a similar arrangement with The Monkey Cage, a slightly liberal polisci blog, late last year.

    “libertarian just like themselves” … useful qualifier .. they aren’t, e.g., “anarcho-libertarians”

I am still trying to understand the benefits of this.

    Check out Daily Kos:

1/22/14 post by Lawrence Lewis: “Washington Post partnering with odious climate change denier blog.” Might help some to understand – or not.

Prof. Eugene Volokh in his introduction to the new format said the crew thought it would promote their views to more people.

And perhaps Ilya Somin will educate the politically ignorant or induce the elite (aka libertarians) to foster smaller government, which may result in less democracy. [See Sandy Levinson’s post at Balkinization on his upcoming conference on democracy which will feature Somin’s new book and two others on the state of democracy.]

Well, I have now gone on the WP site a few times and tried to comment, but it says I don’t have a recognized id. Strange since I signed in with Facebook which the site seems to recognize. Nor will it let me create a new id. Particularly frustrating since I am a WP subscriber.

Bezos after purchasing the WaPo talked about bringing back the “golden age …” which may be code for “The Second Gilded Age,” as apparently the first was golden for libertarians.
