James Wilson on Democracy

From the ratifying convention in Pennsylvania (November 26, 1787)

“The advantages of democracy are, liberty, equal, cautious, and salutary laws, publick spirit, frugality, peace, opportunities of exciting and producing abilities of the best citizens.  Its disadvantages are, dissensions, the delay and disclosure of publick counsels, the imbecility of public measures retarded by the necessity of a numerous consent.”
