  1. Two points

    1) My question would be not why Madoff didn’t abscond, but rather why he didn’t say something like “I’d invested heavily in mortgages, which went utterly bust, completely wiping out the fund. Sorry, but there’s a lot of that going around.”

    2) I really dislike the con-man’s credo, “You can’t cheat an honest man”. As a moral principle, it uses human frailty to shift culpability away from the predator and onto the prey.
