    Walmart is totally tasteless, however, in the financial services context, it could be the force that gets the unbanked into higher quality and lower fee financial products. It could put some of those check cashing companies out of business.

    Pharmaceuticals, too. I get my generic cholesterol and blood sugar meds at BigWally for $5 per month each, with no insurance involvement–that’s their “retail price.” They were the initial groundbreaking retailer that has forced many others to follow suit. They have thus (a) made life-saving drugs available to many who couldn’t previously afford them, and (b) demonstrated (en passant) that the profits in the drug trade, subsidized by the insurers and the government, are unconscionable.
